In the Face of Self Doubt
Watch Roy in Action
I’ve always been afraid of heights—go figure. It wasn’t just the physical kind, but the fear of the unknown, the lack of control. Taking leaps of faith? That never came easy to me.
So when a friend asked me to speak at his company’s in-house retreat, I surprised myself and said, “Why not?”
You’d think after nine years in the NBA and tens of thousands of eyes watching my every move, I’d be comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. But that same uneasiness crept in. It felt familiar—like those quiet moments on the bus to the arena, sitting in the locker room, or standing at center court just before tip-off in Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs against LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
That feeling? It meant something mattered. It pushed me then, and I hadn’t felt it since I put the ball down for good.
From that moment on, I was hooked. Now, I bring the same mindset to the stage and the broadcast booth that I had on the court: Stand Tall, Start Small
Abstract:
Many people desire to be seen or acknowledged for their strengths and successes, but self-doubt and a lack of confidence prevent them from pursuing their ultimate potential.
In this talk, I will pull from my relatable experience of how I personally worked to mute the external noise and quiet the inner voices in order to eliminate self-doubt and become a 9 year veteran NBA player and two-time All-Star. I will share my methods so that attendees will walk away feeling confident about their abilities with a plan to overcome self-doubt.
Abstract:
Many people find themselves in situations where they have big goals for their lives but the endpoint feels very out of reach. The feeling of sheer enormity of what it will take to achieve that goal can be crippling, and can prevent people from even attempting it.
Over the course of my life, and into my 9 year NBA career I leveraged the art of goal setting which was instrumental in my success. I will teach the audience the same methodology and how to leverage it so it will keep them motivated so they can stay on track. I selected goals that seemed small and achievable, and once I got there moved on to another equally achievable goal. This kept me motivated and helped me stay on track, to ultimately achieve incredible success.
